Votes for Schools

Each week, pupils from Years 1 to 6 have a Votes For Schools lesson in which they learn about, discuss and vote on questions surrounding current affairs and issues including health, charity, sport and the environment.

Votes for Schools’ mission is “to give young people the knowledge they need and tools required to change the world around them. The programme helps teachers to address current affairs and sensitive topics while lighting up the classroom and sparking student interest in new areas. The voting platform gives young people a respected and influential voice.”

The questions are age-appropriate with Years 1-3 and Years 4-6 looking at a slightly different question on the same topic. For example, younger children were recently asked “Does giving make you happy?”, while our older pupils debated whether they would donate their organs. Following their lesson, pupils are able to find out how the school voted in comparison to the rest of the country and families are informed of the outcome in the newsletter each week. We appreciate that such discussions can introduce pupils to new subjects and we actively encourage parents to continue the conversation at home.
